The carbon capture system has been installed onboard EPS’ MR tanker, the MT Pacific Cobalt, in Rotterdam.

The system was made by Value Maritime, a Dutch shipping technology firm. It claims that its system can capture up to 40% carbon dioxide and filter out sulphur and particulates from a ship's exhaust.

The system captures carbon dioxide in a special chemical that can be stored in an onboard tank, and transported to shore, where it can eventually be used by outlets like synthetic fuel production. The carbon captured can also be stored in carbon sequestration networks. The chemical can be returned to the vessel and reused after carbon has been released.

The system results in “an immediate carbon emission reduction while removing the need to wait for the development and rationalisation of alternative green fuel infrastructure,” said EPS chief executive Cyril Ducau.

Carbon capture technology has been attracting some interest among shipowners as it promises to reduce emissions immediately without switching fuels. But onboard systems like the one EPS went for take up space on vessels and costs money upfront, which has so far contributed to hold back wider adoption among owners.
