ERMA FIRST to supply onboard CCS systems for Greek newbuilds
Greek marine tech firm ERMA FIRST will supply Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) systems for Greek Capital Gas’ four new 22,000-cbm liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2) carriers built by South Korea’s Hyundai Mipo Dockyard.

The onboard CCS system uses an amine solvent to absorb CO2 from flue gases. The mixture then undergoes heating, which triggers a chemical reaction that separates the CO2 from the solvent. This separated CO2 is then converted into a liquid form using a specialised system developed by the UK-based company Babcock.
This liquefied CO2 is subsequently stored onboard the ship in a pressurised, low-temperature storage setup. Once the ship reaches its destination, the stored CO2 can be offloaded onshore for further utilisation or storage.
These LCO2 carriers are expected to be delivered by 2026. The CCS system can capture over 70% of CO2 emissions from vessel's flue gases, ERMA FIRST's managing director claims.
