Estonian shipbuilder Baltic Workboats has collaborated with compatriot BLRT Grupp to build a fully electric waste collection tanker for the Port of Klaipeda in Lithuania.

The waste collection tanker, with a capacity to carry up to 400 cbm of liquid waste, will be equipped with a 2000-kilowatt hour (kWh) battery pack, offering fully electric propulsion. The vessel “can sail at 8 knots continuously for 8 hours without charging,” Baltic Workboats claims.
The vessel will be designed by Western Baltic Engineering - a subsidiary of BLRT Grupp. Western Baltija Shipbuilding, another subsidiary of BLRT Grupp, will construct the hull and install auxiliary systems. Meanwhile, Baltic Workboats will design and install an electric propulsion system including battery packs.
Baltic Workboats expects the project to take 24 months. The tanker is currently being designed and construction is set to begin in the fall of this year, with delivery scheduled for the summer of 2025.
Once completed, the tanker will operate 24/7 to collect and treat waste and rainwater and transport any additional waste from ships arriving at the Port of Klaipėda to treatment facilities onshore.
