A neopanamax vessel refers to a ship that is designed to fit through the expanded locks of the Panama Canal, known as the Neopanamax locks, which can accommodate larger vessels than the original Panamax locks.

The container vessel, Ever Top, has been retrofitted with the onboard CCS system.

The onboard CCS system was designed and developed by China-based Shanghai Marine Diesel Engine Research Institute and was installed at Huarun Dadong Dockyard (HRDD).

Japanese classification society ClassNK reviewed the system and certified it. This marked it as the world’s first neopanamax vessel to be retrofitted with an onboard CCS system, ClassNK claims.

Carbon capture gaining steam

The shipping industry is promoting carbon capture as a means to reduce the sector's carbon footprint and effectively meet global emissions reduction goals.

Several shipping companies are exploring ways to integrate the technology onboard vessels.

Last month, Singapore-based shipbuilder Seatrium announced its plans to retrofit Wärtsilä’s ready-to-use CCS system on a Solvang-owned LPG carrier.
