German engine manufacturer Everllence (formerly MAN Energy Solutions) has completed the world’s first conversion of a two-stroke engine to a methanol dual-fuel system.

The announcement follows successful sea trials of COSCO Shipping Lines’ 20,000 TEU container vessel, COSCO Shipping Libra, whose main engine was retrofitted to run on methanol.

The project was carried out by Everllence’s after-sales division, Everllence PrimeServ, in partnership with COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry, covering the entire process from concept and engineering to installation, commissioning and sea trials.

To support the development, Everllence commissioned a dedicated testbed engine in Japan in early 2025 to evaluate methanol performance under real-world operating conditions. The results from the evaluation helped fast-track the readiness of this pioneering large-bore retrofit.

“Looking beyond the retrofit that proves the viability of methanol as a marine fuel, Everllence believes that the potential for further large-bore retrofits is substantial with over 300 vessels worldwide currently equipped with S90-class engines and therefore potential candidates for similar retrofits,” the company stated.

Everllence S90-class engines refer to the company's series of large-bore two stroke engines.
