Forestwave to retrofit two vessels with carbon capture technology

July 10, 2024

The Dutch short-sea shipping company Forestwave has contracted maritime technology firm Value Maritime (VM) to retrofit two of its general cargo vessels with VM’s exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCS) and carbon capture units.

The two 10,600-dwt general cargo vessels, FWN Sea and FWN Sun, will be retrofitted at the Value Maritime quay in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

According to Value Maritime, their onboard carbon capture system can filter out sulphur and particulates and capture carbon dioxide from a ship's exhaust fumes. The captured carbon dioxide is then stored in tanks onboard and later discharged onshore, where it can be used for methanol plants or stored underground.

Carbon capture system installation for both vessels is planned for later this year.

CCS gaining steam

In the shipping industry, onboard carbon capture technology is growing in popularity because it helps to lower carbon footprints.

This month, South Korean shipping company Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) announced that it is set to conduct operational tests of its onboard carbon capture system (OCCS) on a container ship.

In June, CSSC Power Group (CPGC), a unit of China’s CSSC, partnered with chemical giant BASF to install an OCCS on multiple liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers. In the same month, classification society Lloyd's Register approved a vessel concept featuring Sinotech Energy’s OCSS.
