Goldwind’s Inner Mongolia biomethanol plant begins trial production

Chinese clean energy company Goldwind Green Energy has produced its first batch of biomethanol at its new 250,000 mt/yr facility in Inner Mongolia.

The first 500 mt of trial production is being shipped to South Korea, according to methanol-focused trade body Methanol Institute (MI). Commercial operations at the facility are expected to begin later this month.

The plant uses wind-powered green hydrogen and locally sourced corn straw to produce biomethanol that meets the EU’s RED III sustainability requirements.

Goldwind has not disclosed further details on the shipment, including its specific destination in South Korea or intended end use.

Notably, the company has secured long-term offtake agreements with shipping companies A.P. Moller-Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, linking the planned biomethanol production with demand from the maritime sector.
