The green shipping corridor project - dubbed the West Green Shipping Corridor - aims to establish a sustainable green shipping corridor between the countries. The MoU was signed on the sidelines of the COP28 Climate Summit in Dubai.

The project will promote low-and zero-emission marine fuels like ammonia, hydrogen or methanol, which will be produced in Canada. Besides, this corridor will also be used for the distribution and export of these clean fuels.

It will also promote low-carbon technologies, including net-zero containers and a low-carbon profile transload centre to transfer cargo.

As part of the initiative, the project will involve partners including government departments, shippers, shipbuilders, ports and terminal operators, clean marine fuel producers and clean-tech firms. The ports participating in the project and the target date for the green shipping corridor have not been specified yet.

Furthermore, the newly launched Green Shipping Corridor Program will invest in developing these corridors focusing on Canada’s east and west coast ports, the Great Lakes, and the St. Lawrence Seaway. It was launched on 1 December with an investment of $165.4 million.
