Chinese shipyard China Merchants Heavy Industry-Jiangsu has placed the order on behalf of an undisclosed European shipowner.

The tanks will have a capacity of 180,000 cbm each. They will be fitted with GTT’s Flex membrane containment system, which the company says is "a cryogenic liner used to contain liquefied gas at low temperatures during shipping, onshore and offshore storage, at atmospheric pressure.”

LNG carriers have been gaining more traction as a way to transport and store natural gas that is supplied to industries. And LNG carriers (LNGCs) play a critical part in transporting fuel to ports to meet demand from various sectors including bunkering.

Earlier this month, GTT received an order from South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries to design tanks for two new LNGCs, set to be delivered by the first quarter of 2027.
