The partners include French oil major TotalEnergies, Norwegian ship designer LMG Marin and classification services provider Bureau Veritas (BV).
The 150,000-cbm capacity carrier will be fitted with GTT’s membrane-type containment system. TotalEnergies will provide vessel specifications and LMG Marin will prepare the concept design. BV will conduct a risk assessment and review the design in accordance with the latest regulatory requirements.
“Hydrogen is a crucial component of the energy transition and holds great promise for our industry,” Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore president Matthieu de Tugny said.
According to GTT, hydrogen can help to decarbonise hard-to-electrify industries as well as shipping.
“The ability to transport by sea very large volumes of hydrogen in liquefied form at -253°C is one of the major technological challenges to be overcome to set up a reliable, efficient and competitive global carbon-free hydrogen value chain,” GTT said in a statement.
The project partners will develop a LH2 carrier concept that can be implemented on an industrial scale for maritime transport.
