South Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has placed the order on behalf of Taiwanese shipping company Yang Ming.

The order marks “the first time that a Chinese ship-owner has opted for LNG propulsion technology for its container ships,” GTT claims.

Each of these 15,500 vessels will be equipped with a single LNG fuel tank with a capacity of 12,700 cbm. The tanks will be fitted with GTT’s Flex membrane containment system, which the company says is "a cryogenic liner used to contain liquefied gas at low temperatures during shipping, onshore and offshore storage, at atmospheric pressure.”

The system will offer “a low and guaranteed Boil-Off Rate (BOR) for improved vessel operations,” GTT adds.

The vessels are scheduled to be delivered between the second quarter of 2026 and the first quarter of 2027.

GTT considers LNG as “the best currently available alternative to improve air quality, a major public health issue. It reduces sulphur oxide emissions by 99%, fine particles by 91% and nitrous oxide emissions by 92%. It also reduces CO2 emissions by up to 25% compared to a conventionally fuelled ship.”

LNG can curb carbon dioxide emissions by about a quarter compared to conventional bunker fuels. But its methane emissions can be 36 times more potent as a GHG compared to carbon dioxide over a century, according to a World Bank study.
