The order has been placed with shipyard SET Schiffbau- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft Tangermünde.
Harbour ferries are small passenger vessels that transport people over short distances within a harbour or coastal area.
While the vessels’ direct contribution to reducing global greenhouse gas emissions will be limited, they are expected to offer valuable technical and operational insights that could aid the development of larger electric ships in the future.
The ferries will feature an electric propulsion system and will be capable of operating for up to 12 hours in regular service, according to HADAG board member Martin Lobmeyer, who shared the update in a LinkedIn post.
"With this investment, we are strengthening our role as a sustainable mobility service provider in the Port of Hamburg," Lobmeyer said.
The company has not disclosed further details about the order, including delivery timelines and deployment schedules.
