Designed by Canadian engineering firm Robert Allan, the tugboat has been built by Turkish boat builder Sanmar Shipyards.
The electric powered tugboat, HaiSea Wee’git, has a battery capacity of 6,000 kilowatt hour (kWh) and can perform “all ship-berthing and unberthing missions on battery power alone,” Sanmar Shipyards says.
The new tugboat will operate alongside its sister vessel, HaiSea Wamis, in the Vancouver Harbour before being deployed at LNG Canada’s new export facility in Kitimat, Canada. The tugboats will provide ship-assist and towing services to LNG carriers calling at the facility.
A third electric tugboat, HaiSea Brave, will be delivered later this year.
HaiSea Marine is a joint venture between Canadian indigenous people representation group Haisla Nation and shipbuilder Seaspan.
