The methanol-capable container ship Seaspan Amazon received the stem while simultaneously unloading cargo at the port.
The bio-methanol was produced at Chinese renewable energy firm Goldwind’s facility in Hinggan League, Inner Mongolia. Hapag-Lloyd did not disclose the physical supplier that delivered the fuel in Busan.
The bunkering operation forms part of a long-term supply agreement Hapag-Lloyd signed with Goldwind in 2024. Under the deal, Goldwind is expected to supply 250,000 mt/year of a blend of bio- and e-methanol from the end of 2027.
By securing an early delivery under the agreement, the companies have gained operational experience with fuel handling.
Goldwind expects the plant’s total production capacity to reach 1.45 million mt/year by 2027, according to Chinese media outlet Caixin.
The producer has also signed a long-term agreement to supply Danish shipping firm A.P. Moller-Maersk with 500,000 mt/year of bio-methanol.
