Waste heat recovery systems recover the thermal energy from the exhaust gas and convert it into electrical energy. These systems use heat, flow and pressure from the exhaust gas to rotate the generator and feed the electric grid onboard a vessel.

Swedish energy technology company Climeon will provide waste heat recovery systems for the six 17,200-TEU dual-fuel vessels, which will be built at HD-HHI’s South Korean shipyard. The systems are anticipated to be delivered in 2024.

The system can generate up to 1 megawatt (MW) of electricity onboard, while cutting fuel consumption by up to 5% and improving the vessel's CII rating, Climeon claims.

It offers shipowners “a cost-effective way to reduce fuel consumption and decrease subsequent carbon emissions,” the company adds.

“Our latest waste heat to power technology, HeatPower 300, has been developed to meet the requirements of the shipping industry and to support the industry’s green transition,” Climeon’s chief executive Lena Sundquist says.
