The 45,000-cbm capacity vessel is equipped with a two-stroke dual-fuel engine that will be able to run on both ammonia and diesel. It will be used to transport liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) or ammonia or vinyl chloride monomer (VCM).

The vessel is integrated with an “ammonia leak prevention system” that can prevent even a small amount of ammonia leak, HD Hyundai Mipo said.

HD Hyundai Mipo developed the ship following a four-month joint research in collaboration with engine maker WinGD, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' Engine Machinery Division and classification society DNV.

HD Hyundai Mipo developed the basic ship design, while WinGD provided engine specifications and operational data. DNV undertook a safety and sustainability review.

Ammonia is gaining a lot of attention from shipowners.

Last month, Singapore-based shipping company Berge Bulk ordered a pair of ammonia dual-fuel bulk carriers from China’s Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry. In the same month, Singapore-based Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) ordered four 210,000-dwt ammonia dual-fuel bulk carriers from CSSC Beihai Shipbuilding.
