The 50,000-dwt tanker will be equipped with an ammonia engine, developed by Swiss engine manufacturer WinGD and manufactured by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries – Engine & Machinery Division (HHI-EMD). The vessel's ammonia fuel supply system will be designed HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) and an ammonia boiler from Kangrim Heavy Industries.
ABS has finalised the vessel's design reviews in accordance with class and regulatory standards.
Simultaneously, ABS approved South Korean shipbuilding firm Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) for its design of a very large ammonia carrier (VLAC). Also this week, classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR) and Chinese shipbuilder Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) have inked a deal to design “the world’s largest VLAC” with a carrying capacity of 100,000 cbm.
The companies have not disclosed if ammonia will be used for propulsion for both of these ammonia carriers.
