The deal was inked between HD Hyundai's shipbuilding affiliates, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI), and Shell.

Under the agreement, HD KSOE will focus on developing key technologies for building large liquefied hydrogen tank and hydrogen cargo handling system. HD HHI will handle the development of hydrogen engine and the design of the LH2 carrier. Shell will assist in technology development and operation of the carrier.

The companies plan to jointly develop this vessel with the goal of commercialisation in 2030.

Last September, HD KSOE obtained concept approval from classification society DNV for its hydrogen system.

The system, developed in collaboration with HD HHI and Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD), “comprises propulsion system, tank & insulation system and cargo handling system,” a DNV spokesperson told ENGINE.
