HPCL has chosen seaweed as a biofuel source due to its sustainability, rapid growth, and technological potential.

Seaweed farming does not pose a threat to food security and does not require the use of fertilizers or irrigation.

Partnering with Sea6 Energy, HPCL aims to develop and scale advanced technologies for converting seaweed into biofuels.

The company has not provided further details about the project, including its timeline or whether any of the biofuel produced will be designated for the shipping industry.

“Happy to note that by bringing in mechanization into Tropical seaweed farming, Sea6Energy can farm large areas of the Ocean by improving the productivity per person and enabling farming in deeper waters. Efforts such as these when scaled up will provide momentum to our energy journey,” India’s Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri said.
