IMO invites pilot project studies to cut ferry emissions
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has invited applications for feasibility studies to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from passenger ships, including ferries and Ro-Pax vessels.

The studies will assess the technical and economic viability of deploying zero- and near-zero emission fuels and technologies on these ships under the IMO’s GreenVoyage2050 programme.
“As public assets operating on fixed routes and predictable schedules, these [passenger] ships are particularly well-suited to the application of zero- and near-zero emission solutions and offer strong potential for wider replication across fleets,” the IMO said.
Public ownership structures could also simplify investment decisions compared with commercially traded shipping segments, it added.
The regulator has invited Member States to submit expressions of interest for participation in the programme.
