The IMO, Norway and the MPA will work together to “collectively implement green shipping activities,” including developing low- and zero-carbon fuels and bunkering infrastructure, says IMO’s Secretary-General Kitack Lim.

The parties have not announced any alternative fuel types they will stimulate production and uptake of, or any target dates for when they will implement any measures.

The IMO-Norway-led GreenVoyage2050 Project will now collaborate with the IMO-Singapore-led NextGEN Connect project under this partnership.

GreenVoyage2050 Project participants include the developing countries Azerbaijan, Belize, China, Cook Islands, Ecuador, Georgia, India, Kenya, Malaysia, Solomon Islands, South Africa and Sri Lanka.

These nations will receive technical and regulatory assistance to develop low- and zero-emission shipping technologies and adopt cleaner marine fuels.

The IMO and MPA launched NextGEN Connect in 2022. The initiative assists IMO member states and shipping companies in developing "route-based action plans" – including low- and zero-carbon fuels and technologies – to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the Asia-Pacific region.
