India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission identifies shipping for potential pilot projects

January 20, 2023

The newly launched mission proposes to explore pilot projects for commercial-scale green hydrogen production to supply hard-to-abate sectors, including shipping.

These projects will aim to replace fossil fuels in these sectors with green hydrogen and its derivatives like green ammonia and green methanol.

“Pilot projects will help identify operational issues and gaps in terms of current technology readiness, regulations, implementation methodologies, infrastructure and supply chains,” the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) blueprint states.

The government believes that the implementation of the mission, which extends until 2030, will develop an ecosystem for green hydrogen production and its use in the country. India’s green hydrogen production capacity is likely to reach at least 5 million mt/year, with a renewable energy capacity addition of about 125 GW.

The mission identifies shipping and port operations as key sectors to drive demand for green fuel in the country.

Aiming to become a global hub for the production, use and export of green hydrogen and other derived fuels, India will develop the required infrastructure, including storage bunkers and port operations equipment.

State-owned Shipping Corporation of India will retrofit at least two ships to run on green hydrogen or other derived fuels by 2027.

Besides, India’s oil and gas companies will have to charter at least one ship each powered by green hydrogen or derived fuels, by 2027. Thereafter, the companies will be required to add one such ship for each year of the mission.

Green ammonia bunkering facilities will be set up in at least one port by 2025, and the same will be replicated at all major ports by 2035.

The mission will also focus on developing electrolysers, hydrogen tanks and fuel cells.
