Japanese conglomerate Itochu will offtake the entire production for use in bunkering operations in Singapore.
“With this collaboration, Kandla, located on the west coast of India, will become the principal production centre of green ammonia for ITOCHU’s bunkering operations in Singapore,” Hiroyuki Tsubai, executive vice president at the company said.
Itochu recently ordered a 5,000 cbm ammonia bunkering vessel, scheduled for delivery in 2027. The vessel will be time-chartered to Zeta Bunkering, Itochu’s bunkering arm, to pilot ship-to-ship ammonia bunkering operations in Singapore that same year.
Itochu plans to commercialise ammonia bunkering in Singapore first, before expanding similar models in Japan, Egypt near the Suez Canal and Spain around the Strait of Gibraltar.
