Port of Tomakomai is a cargo handling port located on the southern coast of Hokkaido region.

The consortium includes Hokkaido Electric Power, Hokkaido Mitsui Chemicals, IHI Corporation, Marubeni Corporation, Mitsui & Co and Tomakomai Futo.

It plans to import green and blue ammonia produced in other countries into Japan, according to the scope of the study. The clean ammonia will be transported to supply facilities located in the eastern and western harbour of the Tomakomai port for further use.

Scope of the study indicates that imported ammonia could also be used for bunkering from the port. However, the companies have not provided more details in this regard.

The consortium chose the Tomakomai area because it has “shipping routes accessible to both the Sea of Japan and the Pacific Ocean”, the joint statement explained.
