The consortium, comprising Hokkaido Electric Power, Hokkaido Mitsui Chemicals, IHI Corporation, Marubeni Corporation, Mitsui & Co, and Tomakomai Futo, plans to launch an ammonia business in the Tomakomai area by 2030.

The consortium aims to establish an ammonia supply chain extending across northern Japan, starting from Tomakomai, to expand ammonia usage.

Scope of the study indicates that the ammonia supply chain could also cater to shipping industry for bunkering. However, the companies have not provided more details in this regard.

In April, the consortium announced a feasibility study to set up facilities for receiving, storing, and supplying ammonia at the Port of Tomakomai.
