The shipping line is attempting to develop an ammonia-fuelled tugboat and an ammonia carrier that will be powered by domestically developed engines.
The project is part of the Green Innovation Fund sponsored by Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).
Delivery of the ammonia-powered tugboat and ammonia carrier is expected in 2024 and 2026, respectively.
Also at the summit, the company presented a conceptual design of an ammonia-ready LNG-fuelled vessel. When delivered, the vessel will likely run on LNG or conventional marine fuels until it is converted to burn ammonia.
NYK was the only shipping company to take part in the G7 summit.
