Japanese shipping firm Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) has signed an agreement with an unspecified producer for long-term supply of liquefied biomethane (LBM).

The fuel is produced from food and other organic waste, the company said, without disclosing the producer or the physical bunker supplier.

K Line added that it has already begun using LBM on some of its existing dual-fuel vessels and projects but did not specify how many vessels have been bunkered so far.

Last year, K Line completed its first LBM bunkering on its car carrier Oceanus Highway, with Shell Western supplying a 500 mt stem at the Port of Zeebrugge.

The company projects the use of LBM to reduce emissions by around 60,800 mt of CO2-equivalent (mtCO2e)/year, it added.
