Kiel achieves AFIR target 5 years before EU deadline
Germany’s Port of Kiel has enabled shore power access across all its terminals, meeting its Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) requirement five years ahead of the EU deadline.

The EU’s AFIR mandates that all major coastal and inland ports within the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) must offer shore power for container and passenger ships by the end of 2029.
Kiel has reached the target early. Its facilities can now supply shore power to three cruise ships and four ferries simultaneously while docked.
“We are proud to be leading – with one clear goal in mind: all ships connected to the grid,” the port authority said.
The EU’s FuelEU Maritime will also require all ships over 5,000 gross tonnage (GT) to connect to shore power when docked at TEN-T ports from 2030.
