The ammonia-powered vehicle carrier that received concept approval had its fuel system and ship design, including an “ammonia-specific fuel containment system,” developed by HD HHI to accommodate the unique properties of ammonia such as toxicity and corrosiveness.

KR assessed the technical suitability of the system through a review of classification rules and regulations at both domestic and international levels, with South Korean conglomerate Hyundai Motor Group’s subsidiaries - Hyundai Glovis and G-Marine Service - collaborating in the risk assessment process.

KR also granted approval for SHI's ammonia-fuelled ultra-large ammonia carrier, which was created under a joint development project (JDP) between KR and SHI. The vessel was designed to transport significant volumes of ammonia while utilising it as propulsion fuel to minimise emissions during operations.

KR and SHI also signed an agreement to develop a 9,300-TEU capacity ammonia-fuelled container ship. SHI will design the primary system layout for ammonia fuel application in the boxship, while KR will verify and approve the design.

All these approvals and deals were revealed during the Posidonia International Shipping Exhibition 2024 in Athens, Greece this week.
