Classification society Llyod’s Register (LR) has partnered with two South Korean shipbuilders to integrate solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology in LNG carriers.

LR and its partners will jointly develop a propulsion system for a 174,000-cbm LNG carrier, combining conventional engine with SOFC technology.

SOFCs are high-efficiency fuel cells that generate electricity from fuels like natural gas, ammonia, or hydrogen through electrochemical reactions.

The consortium includes LR, along with South Korean shipbuilding and offshore engineering company HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) and compatriot shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for this project.

HD KSOE and HHI will lead the design side of the project, while LR will “provide technical guidance, design review services and expertise to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and standards,” the classification society said.
