While the immediate impact of these small-scale hydrogen-powered vessels on global greenhouse gas emissions may be limited, their approval is significant as it offers vital technical and operational insights for developing larger hydrogen-powered ships in the future.
The Saphir, a 300-passenger vessel currently operating round trips on Lake Lucerne, will be retrofitted with a hydrogen fuel-cell propulsion system.
Additionally, Shiptec will build the 12-person hydrogen fuel cell-powered catamaran Quinten Lebt to serve multiple piers on Lake Walen.
Both vessel designs have been certified by LR, demonstrating the safe integration of hydrogen fuel cell systems onboard.
