In June, Maersk concluded its 16,000-TEU methanol-capable vessel series with the delivery of 12 ships. The company also retrofitted one of its conventionally-fuelled container vessel to run on methanol.

This was followed by the delivery of Berlin Mærsk - the first in a larger 17,480-TEU class, bringing its methanol-capable vessels count to 14.

With the same capacity as its predecessor, the newly delivered Beijing Mærsk marks the 15th methanol-capable vessel in its fleet.

German engine manufacturer MAN Energy Solutions (MAN ES) supplied the methanol-capable engine for the vessel, Maersk said. It was built at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea.

Beijing Mærsk will be followed by four more vessels of the same class, completing Maersk’s plan to deploy 19 methanol-capable vessels by the end of the year.
