One methanol-capable vessel, a 16,000-TEU container ship, will be launched at the Port of Los Angeles in August. The vessel will sail to Asia from Los Angeles, Maersk said. The company has not shared details about the other vessel yet.
“Now, we urgently need a global maritime fuel standard and pricing mechanism to truly make a difference and support large-scale green fuel projects,” Clerc added.
Maersk has ordered a total of 25 methanol-fuelled container vessels, of which three have already been launched.
In addition, it plans to retrofit 11 vessels with dual-fuel methanol engines. It has also signed supply agreements with 11 methanol producers to source over 2.2 million mt/year of green methanol by 2025 for its upcoming fleet.
In addition, Green Marine Group will also be ready to supply Maersk's two upcoming vessels with green methanol by 2026, Morten Thomas Jacobsen, Green Marine Group's chief executive commented.
