The vessel, CMA CGM Monaco, was bunkered with an unspecified volume of LNG at the Malaysian port. The operation marked the port’s first LNG bunkering.

The stem was supplied by Petronas Trading Corporation (PETCO), a subsidiary of Malaysian energy company PETRONAS.

PTP is a joint venture between Malaysian utility company MMC Corporation and Dutch port operating firm APM Terminals. It is situated at the mouth of the River Pulai, in southwestern Johor, Malaysia and lies in close proximity to the Straits of Johor, which separates Malaysia and Singapore, as well as the Strait of Malacca.

“This milestone paves the way for further growth in LNG bunkering at PTP, contributing significantly to the decarbonisation of the maritime industry,” PTP chairman Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh says.

LNG can curb carbon dioxide emissions by about a quarter compared to conventional bunker fuels. But its methane emissions can be 36 times more potent as a GHG compared to carbon dioxide over a century, according to a World Bank study.
