MAN ES advances ammonia engine development

December 4, 2024

German engine manufacturer MAN Energy Solutions (MAN ES) is set to begin full-scale testing of its ammonia two-stroke engine at its Research Centre Copenhagen (RCC).

The engine recently completed a 12-month single-cylinder testing phase using ammonia, MAN ES two-stroke R&D team's head Ole Pyndt Hansen said.

The next phase, set to run until mid-2025, will focus on combustion, emissions, engine tuning, atomiser performance and control system verification along with other parameters, Hansen said.

MAN ES aims to deliver the first ammonia engine by 2026, MAN ES' spokesperson told ENGINE.

The engine operates by injecting liquid ammonia into the combustion chamber via high-pressure fuel injectors. Once injected, the ammonia vaporises, ignites, and burns to generate the energy required to power the engine.

Although testing has advanced, MAN ES is behind schedule on its initial goal to launch a two-stroke ammonia engine for large container ships by 2024, with a retrofit package for existing vessels slated for 2025.
