Over the coming months, the engine manufacturer will conduct testing of its dual-fuel two-stroke ammonia engine at its Research Centre Copenhagen (RCC) laboratory, MAN ES' principal promotion manager Nikolaos Kourtidis said at a webinar organised by the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping (MMMCZCS) today.
They will run tests to assess how well ammonia burns, he added. The company expects to deliver the commercial variant of its dual-fuel two-stroke ammonia engine to a shipyard by the fourth quarter of next year, Kourtidis said. It will be a 60 mm (millimetre) -bore ammonia engine.
Ships from segments such as bulk carriers, container feeders, gas carriers or car carriers typically use conventional 60-mm bore engines.
Kourtidis thinks that the first ammonia-powered vessel with a MAN ES engine should be sailing by 2025.
