12 methanol-fuelled vessels were added to DNV's AFI database in September, said Martin Christian Wold, principal consultant at DNV in a social media post. This includes retrofits, he confirmed.

However, August saw a "net-zero count for methanol”, he said, following a record of 48 orders in July. “There were in fact a couple of firm orders [in August] but we also removed some ships which turned out to be methanol ready only,” he added.

The largest share of newbuild orders for methanol-fuelled are container ships (151), followed by tankers (37). There are seven orders each for offshore vessels and bulk carriers.

Apart from methanol, 21 LNG-fuelled vessels were ordered in August and 8 in September. “[August was] the second strongest month for LNG bunkering in more than a year,” Wold said.
