MISC's petroleum arm, AET, has placed orders for construction with Chinese shipbuilder Dalian Shipbuilding Industry (DSIC). It has also signed a time-charter agreement with PETCO Trading Labuan Company (PTLCL) for the two vessels.

Both MISC and PTLCL are subsidiaries of the Malaysian national energy firm Petronas.

The companies have not disclosed a timeline for the delivery of these vessels.

“The signing of these contracts represents a significant step forward in the partners’ efforts to make ammonia a viable fuel for the maritime industry,” MISC said.

“Through these vessels, PTLCL will be able to transport its products to customers around the world while contributing to the industry decarbonisation by utilising ammonia as the cleaner alternative to conventional fuel,” it added.

The collaboration between AET and PTLCL, initiated last year with a memorandum of understanding (MoU), reflects proactive steps toward deploying low-emission aframax tankers.
