Japanese conglomerate Mitsui and Australian miner Fortescue have submitted proposals to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) to lead the development of ammonia bunkering on Singapore’s Jurong Island.

These two companies join three other major Japanese firms in the race to spearhead ammonia bunkering and power generation efforts on Jurong Island.

Earlier in July, the MPA shortlisted two separate consortia that included trading company ITOCHU, shipping giant Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) and conglomerate Sumitomo as potential bunkering partners.

Once selected the bunker partner will be required to provide at least 100,000 mt/year of ammonia for bunkering. Initial bunkering operations will start with trucks and later transition to ship-to-ship bunkering.

The MPA is also in the process of developing ammonia bunker standards, with plans to release them by next year.

“The standards will cover custody transfer requirements, safety procedures and crew competencies, to ensure safe bunkering operations and handling of these fuels,” MPA said.
