Mitsui E&S starts prototype testing of MAN ES ammonia engine
Japanese shipbuilder Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding (Mitsui E&S) has started prototype testing of German engine maker MAN Energy Solutions’ two-stroke ammonia dual-fuel engine at its Tamano Factory in Japan.

Prototype testing is an early-stage evaluation process where a new engine is tested in a controlled setting to assess performance, efficiency and safety. Theoretically, this step bridges the gap between concept and real-world application and shows whether an engine is commercially viable before large-scale deployment.
Mitsui E&S will also develop peripheral equipment for the engine.
Peripheral components in marine engines refer to external or auxiliary parts that support engine operation and enhance functionality, such as the fuel supply system, exhaust, and other supporting equipment.
The company will then deliver the engine, fuel supply system, and peripheral components to the vessel and verify their safety and performance during the ongoing prototype testing.
This test follows MAN ES’ recent success in testing its engine at 100% load capacity for the first time. The load test validated the engine’s ammonia fuel-injection system, with “diesel-pilot amounts recorded according to our targets,” the MAN ES said.
