The Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping (MMMCZCS) has revealed a concept design for a 3,500 TEU ammonia-capable container ship.

The vessel will be powered by a dual-fuel engine that can run on ammonia and conventional fuels. To manage tank pressure and ensure safe operation, two reliquefaction units will handle boil-off gas.

Ammonia will be stored midship in a 4,300 cbm Type A tank, which is box-shaped and designed to hold fully refrigerated ammonia at around -33°C. It includes a full secondary barrier to safely contain leaks.

The bunker station will also be located midship for easy access and secure handling, while the fuel preparation rooms (FPRs) will be positioned near the engine room in separate, gas-tight compartments. A tall, forward-mounted vent mast and well-placed ventilation outlets will help disperse any leaked ammonia away from crew areas.

Additional safety measures include dedicated ammonia drain tanks and gas detection systems.

The concept design was developed in collaboration with German engine manufacturer Everllence (formerly MAN Energy Solutions), Finnish design firm Deltamarin, and gas equipment maker Eltronic FuelTech.

It has received Approval in Principle from classification societies ABS and Lloyd’s Register (LR).
