MOL collaborates on large coastal ammonia carrier study

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines' subsidiary, MOL Coastal Shipping, is collaborating with compatriot tanker company Asahi Tanker and ship manager IKOUS on a concept study for a coastal ammonia carrier.

A coastal ship is a shallow-hulled vessel that is used for transporting cargo along a coastline.

The project aims to develop a vessel capable of transporting large quantities of ammonia. The companies also plan to equip the vessel with ammonia fuel cells for propulsion.

The concept study will focus on designing the shape and structure of the ship's hull to make it more efficient in reducing fuel consumption and improving cargo handling.

The trio aims to launch the vessel by 2029.

Japan is witnessing a rise in demand for ammonia, especially for transporting it via coastal ships to power plants and other users, MOL says.
