LNG supplier Molgas announced that it recently completed the first-ever LNG de-gassing operation on an LNG-powered vessel in the UK.

The operation was carried out on board MV Glen Sannox, an LNG-powered dual-fuel ferry operated by CalMac Ferries, during its annual maintenance at Inchgreen, Greenock.
LNG road haulage provider AD Fuels provided on-site operational support for the process.
De-gassing means clearing all LNG vapour out of a ship’s fuel tanks. When LNG tanks are to be refilled, serviced or decommissioned, the tanks must be completely free of gases to create a safe working environment.
In this case, the de-gassing was carried out in two stages. First, flaring burned off any remaining methane in a controlled flame, so the tank is cleared of fuel. Then nitrogen purging was used to fill the tank with non-flammable nitrogen, which pushed out any leftover LNG vapour and removed the risk of ignition.
Once free of flammable vapour, the vessel was confirmed safe for all maintenance work.
