The ship-to-ship operation was carried out by the Monjasa Thunder, using a B30 product composed of 30% fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) and 70% very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO).
Jonas Bruslund, general manager for Latin America, noted that while biofuel adoption in Panama has lagged behind hubs like Singapore and Rotterdam due to limited local feedstock and customer commitments, a new strategy now ships European biofuels to support the Panama Canal Authority’s low-carbon goals.
The company has outlined plans to scale up the operation, aiming for a monthly capacity between 5,000 mt and 7,000 mt.
In the Americas, Monjasa has established biofuels partnerships at the Port of Callao in Peru and in Cartagena, Colombia.
Despite regulatory pressures on the shipping industry to reduce emissions, the current demand for biofuel remains modest.
