Monjasa plans green ammonia bunker supply in northwest Europe

Monjasa will provide logistics for supply of green ammonia from the upcoming HØST PtX Esbjerg production facility near the port of Esbjerg in southern Denmark.
The HØST PtX Esbjerg project is managed by CIP and is forecast to produce 600,000 mt/year of green ammonia. Some of this ammonia will be reserved for Monjasa, but exactly how much will not be disclosed now, a company spokesperson says.
The plant will be powered completely by renewable energy, according to Monjasa. It is expected to start producing green ammonia in 2028-2030, depending on the final commissioning of a Danish offshore wind farm.
Meanwhile, Monjasa has already initiated dialogues with potential buyers of green ammonia bunker fuel. Interested buyers are “asking us about future availability of green ammonia,” Monjasa’s spokesperson says.
Ammonia demand from ships is expected to pick up some time after ammonia-fuelled engines are launched to the market from 2024.
Monjasa and CIP argue that the green ammonia plant's location in Esbjerg will provide easy access to major northwest European ports such as Rotterdam and Hamburg.
This project will show “shipowners around the world that green ammonia is becoming available as a long-term marine fuel option,” Monjasa’s group responsibility director Jesper Nielsen says.
While expressing confidence in the project, Monjasa has highlighted that a regulatory framework and infrastructure for distribution of green ammonia “still need to be developed”.
