MSC container ships to connect to shore power in Hamburg
Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has signed an agreement with the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) to provide shore power for its container ships at the Hamburg Container Terminal (CTH).

The new development has come a month after the HPA began offering shore power connectivity to container ships at its container terminal.
In June last year, MSC Cruises, a subsidiary of MSC, inked a deal with HPA to supply all its cruise ships with shore power during their port stays. This makes MSC the first shipping company to utilise shore power for both its cruise and container ships in the port.
The plant at the CTH, completed this year, has three connection points, each providing an output of 7.5 megavolt amperes, and the electricity used is entirely from renewable sources, the port authority said.
In the cruise sector, HPA already has shore power agreements with Carnival Group, TUI Cruises, Fred Olsen, Princess Cruises, Phoenix Reisen, and Norwegian Cruise Line. A new shore power system for cruise ships began operation at the Cruise Center Steinwerder in April 2024. Additionally, the new cruise terminal in HafenCity, expected to be completed in 2025, will be equipped with a shore power system from the start.
