The MSC Euribia can also be powered by e-methane or liquefied biomethane (LBM) when these fuels become commercially available, said the Geneva-headquartered Mediterranean Shipping Company's (MSC) cruise division MSC Cruises.

E-methane and LBM can function as drop-in fuels in LNG as they are all basically the same molecule produced in different ways. Therefore, vessels capable of running on LNG won’t need modifications to run on pure LBM or LBM-LNG blends.

“LNG is key to the development of low carbon solutions for shipping as emerging technologies such as fuel cells can be operated with LNG until zero emissions bio-LNG or green hydrogen become available at scale,” added MSC Cruises.

The company also confirmed that the new passenger ship will be equipped with shore power plug-ins to reduce carbon emissions while docked at port.

The Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France, will deliver the liner to MSC Cruises on 31 May.
