MSC Cruises, the cruise division of Mediterranean Shipping Company, used 6,856 mt of mass-balanced LBM on one of its dual-fuel vessel, MSC World Europa.
The biomethane used in 2025 was produced from waste-based feedstocks including whey permeate, food waste, sewage sludge, organic municipal waste and manure.
The biomethane was injected into the European natural gas grid and an equivalent volume of mass-balanced biomethane was liquefied and supplied for bunkering, according to the company.
MSC Cruises also consumed approximately 3,000 mt of biofuels across two of its conventionally fuelled cruise ships, it said.
The company bunkered 1,727 mt of 100% hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO100) on MSC Opera during a four-month trial and 572 mt of HVO100 on MSC Seaview.
MSC Seaview also received 684 mt of a B24-VLSFO blend comprising 164 mt of UCOME-based biofuel and 520 mt of VLSFO.
The combined use of LBM and biofuels reduced its GHG emissions by around 48,714 mtCO2e compared with conventional marine fuels, the company noted.
