Norled's hydrogen ferry enters commercial operations
Norled says it is the “world’s first” ferry powered by liquid hydrogen-fuelled proton-exchange membrane fuel cells.

The vessel is equipped with two 200-kilowatt (kW) hybrid module fuel cells from Canadian fuel cell maker Ballard Power Systems. UK-based hydrogen producer Linde supplies liquid green hydrogen to power the fuel cells.
“It [is] no longer only NASA [that] uses liquid hydrogen as a fuel. Norled does too. This is a substantial leap towards the goal of zero emissions for the maritime industry,” Norled’s chief technology officer Erlend Hovland said in a social media post.
Norled estimates that the vessel will be able to “reduce its annual carbon emissions by up to 95%” compared equivalent vessels running on conventional oil-based fuels.
