Northern Lights is a carbon capture and storage joint venture between oil majors Equinor, Shell and TotalEnergies.
The CO2 carrier Northern Pioneer will transport liquefied CO2 from capture sites in Europe to the Northern Lights receiving terminal in Øygarden, western Norway.
Built by China’s Dalian Shipbuilding Industry, the vessel features rotor sail and air lubrication technologies. A second vessel, Northern Pathfinder, is under construction at the same shipyard, while two additional vessels are being built by Dalian Shipbuilding Offshore.
All four vessels will be managed by K LINE LNG Shipping, a subsidiary of the Japanese shipping company Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K LINE).
